Martinek Residence
The owners decided to re-build on their same lot in order to add a swimming pool, private courtyard, and covered parking area. Current zoning laws were in conflict with the design of the home, and two use permits and seven variances were granted. The clients wanted to have privacy from their neighbors while also providing natural lighting through the house. Creeping fig vines were put on the walls so the neighbors do not have to look at concrete. The design incorporates four intimate courtyards which help create microclimates within the same lot. Windows were placed facing the courtyard to give lighting while also giving privacy. Numerous glass doors allows for some sections of the home to be completely operable and fosters a great indoor/outdoor feeling.
